I'm traveling this week. In Nashville right now on a layover then it's on to Philadelphia. I didn't bring the recipe box with me, so there will be a brief pause in the weekly posting of recipes.
On another note, saw the movie Julie & Julia last week. It was just delightful. Reminded me again how important food and cooking is in our lives. I highly recommend the movie.

Ice Box Rolls
1 cup hot milk
1/2 cup shortening
2 cakes yeast
2 eggs beaten
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
4 cups flour
Add shortening to the hot milk. Allow to cool until lukewarm. Crumble in yeast and stir 'til dissolved. Add beaten eggs, sugar and salt. Beat thoroughly. Add flour and beat it all in. Cover and let stand until double in bulk. Punch down, place in a greased bowl, cover and place in refrigerator. Remove from refrigerator 3 hours before using letting it raise until double in bulk. Make into rolls. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown.

Butter Horns
1 cup milk

3 beaten eggs
4 1/2 cups flour
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Scald milk and add shortening, sugar and salt. Cool until lukewarm. Add crumbled yeast and stir 'til yeast is softened. Add beaten eggs. Mix in flour and beat until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until at least double in bulk. Punch down and divide into three pieces. Bake for 15 minutes.

Graham Cracker Cake

1 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 cup milk
1 tsp almond extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening until fluffy. Beat in eggs. Sift flour, baking powder and salt 3 times and add alternately with graham cracker crumbs into creamed mix. Line a baking pan with wax paper. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.

Luncheon Dish
1 lb. ground beef
1 lb. ground pork
2 cups uncooked rice
2 cups chopped celery
2 cans concentrated mushroom soup
3 cans water
2 small bottles soy sauce
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix all ingredients, place in casserole and bake covered for 1/2 an hour. Remove cover and bake an additional hour. Serve with gravy.

Forgotten Cake
6 egg whites
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
Beat egg whites until frothy. Sprinkle salt and cream of tartar over top and beat until stiff. Gradually beat in sugar. Add vanilla flavoring and beat until it forms a peak. Pour into a well buttered 9" spring mold. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. As soon as pan is in the oven turn off heat and forget until morning.

1/2 lb. blanched almonds
7 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
Mix all ingredients together with hands and knead well. Form into loaves and place in freezer overnight. Remove from freezer and slice cookies about 1/16 inch thick and bake at 350 degrees until done.

Soften 2 cakes of yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Scald milk and add sugar, salt, and shortening. Cool until luke warm. Add 1 cup flour, beaten egg and yeast. Beat thoroughly. Add remaining flour and cardimum and beat well. Let rise until double in bulk and bake 35-40 minutes at 375 degrees.
Topping: Blend 1/3 cup powdered sugar, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon and 1/4 cup chopped nuts and sprinkle over the top.

Apple Sauce Cake
This one's a bit of fun because there's only ingredients and a cook time. You'll have to figure out how to put it all together yourself! (Shouldn't be too hard.)
1/2 cup butter or lard
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped nuts (your choice)
1 1/2 cups apple sauce
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. baking soda (dissolved in apple sauce)
Bake at 350 for about 1 hour - makes large cake.
